On the invitation of Clive Minton, a world expert on shorebirds, my wife Mandy and I used Clive’s Land Cruiser to cross Australia from Melbourne in the Southeast to Broome in the Northwest. At the end of our long 3 week road trip, we spent 10 days helping trap shorebirds on Australia’s western coast. Our trip took us to some of the iconic natural sites of Australia, like Cooperpedi, Ayers rock, and the Kimberlys. Trapping shorebirds gave us an intimate connection with the people who care about birds in Australia and the great variety of shorebirds that winter in Western Australia. These birds fly to the Arctic to breed as well.
