The windward Islands provide a vital refuge for desperate birds seeking a safe harbor to restore themselves. Many knots, whimbrels, semipalmated sandpipers and other shorebirds take refuge in these islands, including Guadaloupe. Also part of France the island’s people enjoy a robust economy and extraordinary natural beauty. We visited a killing swamp – a wetland constructed to attract shorebirds in need of a wetland to kill them. We watched a whimbrel helpless against over forty shotgun blasts. This selfish thrill is both brutal and unreasonable. No one should be allowed to hunt an animal and take no responsibility for its survival. Nearly all the species being shot by Guadaloupe hunters are in fast decline.
